About Juan

Juan Carlos Hernandez

Dance Instructor, Performer, Choreographer

With over ten years of dance experience, Juan Hernandez has created a unique style that has many dancers in the salsa scene considering him the smoothest salsa dancer in San Diego.  This is why he has a large following of students scattered about the various dance studios that he teaches at.

Juan has been teaching group and private lessons since 2003 when he joined Majesty in Motion Dance Company, the largest and fastest growing salsa dance company in San Diego.  He is now co-director of Majesty in Motion, teaching, choreographing and running drills for a couple of the teams.  You will also find Juan performing with Majesty in Motion’s professional dance team as well as with his dance partner, Erica Llamas.

Juan comes from Colombian descent but was originally born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in between Colombia, Miami, Spain, and New York. At the age of 16, Juan was introduced to salsa music on the park playground, where his interest in salsa dancing began. From then on he began going out with his friends to local salsa clubs. Juan joined the United States Marine Corps at 18 where he was sent to serve two years in Okinawa, Japan. To his surprise salsa was very big within the Japanese community, which led him to continue with his dancing. He was transferred to San Diego in September of 1999, where his love for salsa dancing took off to another level.

In October of 2002 he was asked to join Majesty In Motion Dance Company. In 2003 he decided to begin teaching salsa classes. Since then he's taught and performed at numerous venues and private events around San Diego, Boston, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Oakland, Palm Springs, Laughlin, and as a guest dancer six consecutive times at the World Salsa Congress in Los Angeles. Juan has also been a guest performer with world renowned salsa dancer, Jayson Molina.

Juan's dance background has led to his unique style that has been recognized within the salsa scene. He is now co-director of Majesty in Motion Dance Company, now the fastest growing dance company in San Diego, with over 100 members and seven different dance teams. The company has now traveled internationally to perform and teach in China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
